The Red Circle
My Life in the Navy SEAL Sniper Corps and How I Trained America’s Deadliest Marksmen
By Brandon Webb
with John David Mann
Foreword by Marcus Lutrell
In April 2009, my agent called and told me a story about something that had just happened to her.
It was just days after three Navy SEAL snipers had executed the magic act that saved the life of Captain Richard Phillips of the Maersk Alabama, and she had been watching a CNN interview with the guy who had created the sniper course that trained these three heroes.
“I’d like to have that guy as a client!” she told a friend.
This was on a Saturday. The following Monday, that guy walked into her office looking for an agent. His name was Brandon Webb. And now she was calling just to check if by any chance I was interested in writing his book.
“I didn’t figure you’d want to do this one,” she said. “I mean, this is not exactly the kind of thing you write.”
It is now.
“What you’re about to read is not just the making of a Navy SEAL sniper, but the story of one guy who went on to help shape the lives of hundreds of elite Special Operations warriors. Brandon has a great story to tell, and it is living proof that you can achieve anything you put your mind to.”
— Marcus Luttrell, Navy SEAL and bestselling author of the #1 national bestseller Lone Survivor
“Brandon’s story hits center mass! If you want to know what makes up the DNA of a Navy SEAL and have a behind-the-scenes look at the best sniper program in the world, then ‘hold 1 right for wind’ and read The Red Circle.”
— Chris Kyle, SEAL Team Three Chief and bestselling author of American Sniper
“An impressive and well-written account of the most elite snipers in the world. Webb recounts with heartfelt and vivid description the training, trials, and heartache that are all costs of choosing this lifestyle. Like all true warriors, he does no chest thumping, but rather gives an honest account that proves that, after all, SEAL snipers are only human. The Red Circle is a great book.”
— Howard E. Wasdin, Navy SEAL and bestselling author of SEAL Team Six
“Another forceful statement from the Brotherhood of SEALs, Brandon Webb’s The Red Circle demonstrates why he wanted to be a SEAL, what it takes to be a SEAL, how you survive the life of a SEAL, and the value of mind over matter. A valuable read for anyone aspiring to reach goals that seem unattainable—in any walk of life.”
— CDR Richard Marcinko, USN (Ret.), founding father and first commanding officer of SEAL Team Six and bestselling author of Rogue Warrior
“The story of today’s Navy SEALs is Brandon Webb’s to tell, and The Red Circle does it masterfully. This definitive work at once proves and explodes the myths behind Naval Special Warfare and the men who meet its challenges. Strap in for a wild ride.”
— CDR Ward Carroll, USN (ret.), editor of Military.com
“The Red Circle beautifully captures the author’s introspection, humor, and lion-hearted daring. A riveting true-life adventure story, told with frankness and skill.”
— Pat Kilbane, actor (MADtv, Seinfeld, Semi-Pro) and author of The Brain-Eater’s Bible
“The characters in this book are America’s finest and they will remind you that freedom is not free: it has to be protected, and at great sacrifice to a select few at the tip of the spear. The Red Circle will also remind you that in life, sports, and business, you have a job to do. Brandon’s story will compel you to get that job done and get it done right. I couldn’t put it down.”
— Kevin Kouzmanoff, Third Baseman with the Cleveland Indians, San Diego Padres, Oakland A’s, and Colorado Rockies
“The Red Circle book personifies all that is great within the Naval Special Warfare community. It’s all true (even the stories about me), and most importantly it shows the reader that there is no one thing that makes a good operator or reliable frogman in the field. We all come from different backgrounds and leave that past behind to focus on mission success and the wellbeing of one another in combat. On more than one occasion, I trusted my life to Brandon and always felt better knowing he had my back. Some of the stories he tells here are hilarious, and all are told from the heart—and in true team fashion, with no mercy! These are the stories from behind the SEAL platoon walls that the books always leave out—until now.”
— Chris Osman, Navy SEAL and coauthor of SEALs: The US Navy’s Elite Fighting Force
