California Sojourn

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

It’s February, and I’m confused.

I’m sitting in the dining room of the La Jolla Hyatt, located a mere thirty-five miles north of the Mexican border in what is normally one of the sunniest, most gorgeous places in the U.S.—and it’s a rainy, overcast day.

Oh, wait a sec—now I understand. Southern California heard I was coming here to write some books, and prepared a bit of New England weather for me so I wouldn’t be too homesick. How thoughtful!

If you’ve seen the film The Secret, you might remember John Assaraf’s story about finding a “vision board” he’d stored away for years, and realizing that the dream house he had pinned to this board years earlier and then forgotten about was in fact the very house he was now living in. Well, the story is true, the house is magnificant, and I just spent the morning there watching John and his partner Murray Smith being filmed by staff from Simon & Schuster for a promotional clip they’re preparing for their new book, The Answer, which I had the pleasure of writing with them a few months ago. (Due out in May.)

That’s why I’m in Southern California, watching the rain.

Actually, while I’m here I’m working on not one, not two, but three other books, too. 1) I’m doing a second project with John. 2) Yesterday I spent the day with two doctors from Scripps Memorial Hospital, brainstorming a book with them. 3) And the day before that, I had lunch with Greg Reid, cocreator of the film Pass It On, brainstorming about the book version of that film.

More on all those projects as details come my way.

It’s going to be a very busy year of books.

The Go-Giver on iTunes

Monday, February 4th, 2008

You can now listen to The Go-Giver on your iPod. Our audio producer Gilles Dana put Bob and me in a room in Manhattan a few weeks ago and had us alternate chapters (more or less) — and the result is available now for download on both iTunes and Audible.com.

I haven’t listened to the whole thing yet. I was fortunate in that the way the rotation happened to work out, I got to read my two favorite chapters: the one with Joe and Susan, and the one with Debra Davenport’s speech. Hope I did a decent job channeling Ms. Davenport. (You be the judge.)
